Is There a Gender Pain Gap?

At McGuiness Law we often hear from women clients that they feel like their doctor is not taking their pain seriously. Clinical research has shown that women receive less prescriptions for pain medications than men complaining of the same ailments, since their pain is often dismissed as psychological. This problem is made worse by the fact that most medical treatment provider’s knowledge of the human body is based on male physiology.

The gender bias in our medical system does not stop with chronic pain and can be fatal; in 2018 the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada released a report indicating that 59% of Canadian deaths caused by stroke are women, yet 2/3 of the clinical research focusses on men.

The lawyers at McGuiness Law are educated on the most up-to-date information on pain and treatment options for our clients, male or female. We will listen to you and try to understand your needs.
